Open Year Round

Challenger Learning Center

The Challenger Learning Center of Kentucky is one in a network of 47 Challenger Learning Centers which were started by the families of the Challenger Astronauts tragically killed in the 1986 Space Shuttle disaster. The Challenger Learning Center of Kentucky was the 34th center in the network and the first located in a rural area. Our mission is to demonstrate the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in our everyday lives and how fun and exciting these topics can be. The Center started in 1999 and hosts approximately 7,500 students per year in the various programs we offer.

The CLCKY provides a first class, space-based learning environment where schoolchildren, families, senior citizens, corporate teams and other community members “fly” simulated space missions. The CLCKY features a Mission Control Center modeled after the one at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, a Transporter/Space Shuttle, and a Spacecraft/Space Station simulator where experiments are performed and probes are assembled and “launched” into the depths of outer space.

Center for Courageous Kids

This is a wonderful opportunity for those “medically fragile” young people who typically would not be able to attend camps due to their illnesses and/or financial constraints. Campers can experience activities like horseback riding, boating, fishing, rock climbing and bowling with no limitations or barriers! The CCK family weekend retreats and summer camp sessions are offered at NO COST to the children and families they serve. For more information, contact Kelli Firguin at (270) 618-2900 with any questions.

The Center for Courageous Kids hosts a summer camp session designed for children with diabetes. CCK is a not-for-profit medical camp where children living with life threatening illnesses come free of charge and enjoy the pleasures of a summer camp experience. The hope is to extend their reach throughout eastern Kentucky and appeal to many new campers who have never attended a CCK summer session. For more information, check www.courageouskids.org or call the camper admissions office at (270) 618-2912.
